David Wood, President and CEO
Mr. Wood joined Spinal Modulation in 2007 as President and Chief Executive Officer. Prior to joining Spinal Modulation, he served as President and Chief Operating Officer of CardioNet, a cardiac arrhythmia monitoring service business. Previously, Mr. Wood served as Vice President and General Manager of the Drug Delivery Business Unit and as Vice President of the Diagnostics and Drug Discovery Business Unit of SurModics, Inc. Before joining SurModics, he held a variety of management positions in product development, operations, and marketing at Guidant Corporation’s Cardiac Rhythm Management Business Unit. Prior to Guidant’s formation as a spin off from Eli Lilly and Company, Mr. Wood held several management positions at Lilly’s Cardiac Pacemakers, Inc. subsidiary. Mr. Wood joined Eli Lilly and Company as a Chemical Engineer and while at Lilly he served in engineering, financial, and medical device business development positions. Mr. Wood received his B.S. in Chemical Engineering from Vanderbilt University and an M.B.A. from The Wharton School at the University of Pennsylvania.
Al Burdulis, VP of Mechanical Systems
Mr. Burdulis joined Spinal Modulation in 2006, as one of the first engineers. He brings with him over 28 years of experience in medical device startups, including Intermedics, Encore, Kinamed, Menlo Care, Perclose, and most recently Conformis. He has taken more than 10 products from concept to commercialization success and has 10 issued patents with 10 additional patents pending. Mr. Burdulis received his BS in Mechanical Engineering from University of California at Santa Barbara.
Rick O’Connor, VP of Electrical and Software
Mr. O’Connor joined Spinal Modulation in 2008 as VP of Electrical and Software Engineering. He has more than 15 years of experience in medical device development. He has developed more than 20 products in the fields of cardiac rhythm management, atrial fibrillation ablation, heart valves, cardiac surgery, and orthopedics. He has relevant operational experience in ICD manufacturing and supply chain development. He has 14 issued patents in relevant fields. Mr. O’Connor received his BS in Aerospace Engineering from Clarkson University and his MBA from the University of San Francisco.
Lynn Elliott, Chief Technical Officer
Mr. Elliott joined Spinal Modulation in 2010. He brings with him over 28 years of engineering and product development experience, along with over 15 years of executive management experience. His last 22 years have been in active implantable medical devices. Mr. Elliott spent the last 4 years in early stage companies exploring neurostimulation for a variety of unmet clinical needs. He was most recently at ConcepTx Medical and spent the prior 18 years in Guidant's Cardiac Rhythm Management group. Mr. Elliott received his BS in Electrical Engineering from South Dakota School of Mines and Technology and his MS in Software Engineering from the University of St Thomas.
Timothy R. Placek, VP of Regulatory Affairs and Quality Systems
Mr. Placek joined Spinal Modulation in 2009 and brings extensive regulatory affairs experience from his previous companies. Prior to joining Spinal Modulation, he served as VP of Clinical Affairs, Regulatory Affairs and Quality Systems at IDEV Technologies, Inc. Among his achievements, Mr. Placek has successfully obtained 8 product approvals and clearances, as well as 8 successful ISO quality system certifications through successful quality team building.
Jeff Kramer, PhD, Director of Clinical Operations
Dr. Kramer joined Spinal Modulation in 2009 to lead the clinical department. Prior to joining Spinal Modulation, Dr. Kramer managed the translational research program at the Millennium Pain Center in Bloomington, Illinois. He has over 15 years experience in pre-clinical and clinical neuroscience research, where he has published extensively and been involved in more than 20 pharmaceutical and medical device studies. Dr. Kramer has a BS/MS in Kinesiology and a PhD in Molecular and Integrative Physiology from the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign.
Dimas Jiménez, Controller and Director of Administration
Mr. Jiménez joined Spinal Modulation in 2008. He has 19 years experience in finance, including the last 10 years in healthcare. He has held positions at Pearl Therapeutics, Theravance, Medtronic, Fusion Medical, and JP Morgan. He brings with him extensive knowledge in contract negotiations and has managed vendors for phase 2 and phase 3 clinical trials. Mr. Jiménez holds a CFA designation and has received his BA from Dartmouth University and his MBA from Stanford University.
Dan Brounstein, Director of Marketing
Mr. Brounstein joined Spinal Modulation in 2008. He has over 12 years experience in medical device engineering and brings with him a vast technical knowledge in relative fields. Prior to Spinal Modulation, he set up a West Coast operation for Blackstone Medical, a division of Orthofix. He has been involved with multiple startups including Rubicor Medical, Heartport, and Progressive Angioplasty Systems. He has 8 issued patents, with multiple applications pending. Mr. Brounstein received his BS in Biomedical Engineering from University of California at San Diego and his MBA from the Haas School of Business at University of California at Berkeley
