John LeMoncheck President and Chief Executive Officer
John LeMoncheck is the President and CEO of SiBEAM, a pioneer in developing intelligent millimeter wave technologies for wireless communications. LeMoncheck hails from Silicon Image where he was vice president of CE and PC/Display business and was responsible for all product, market and business strategy development and execution including leading the company’s efforts to promote worldwide adoption of HDMI. Prior to Silicon Image, LeMoncheck was vice president of software and systems engineering for TeraLogic (purchased by Zoran), directing all platform and software implementations for TeraLogic's digital television solutions. Before TeraLogic, LeMoncheck was a member of the founding team at Arithmos, Inc (purchased by ST Microelectronics) where he was vice president of engineering and developed Arithmos' line of display processors targeted at the flat panel market. In the past, LeMoncheck also directed The LEGO Company's West Coast design center, which was focused on high-tech toys, including the successful MINDSTORMS product line. LeMoncheck earned his BSEE from U.C. San Diego and spent several years researching VLSI for imaging and pattern recognition applications during his graduate studies at Caltech.
Chinh Doan Vice President, RF & Analog Design, Co-Founder
Doan leads the digital IC team. Doan also led the research and development effort at the Berkeley Wireless Research Center (BWRC) from 1999 until the founding of SiBEAM in December 2004, exploring the limits of standard digital bulk-CMOS technology for use at frequencies above 20GHz, focusing on 60GHz. In February 2005, Doan was awarded the Jack Raper Award for Outstanding Technology Directions Paper at ISSCC 2004 for co-developing a modeling approach for devices up to 65 GHz and for demonstrating the world’s first CMOS amplifiers beyond 30GHz. Prior to his work at the BWRC, Doan worked as an engineer for Teradyne in their Analog Design Group and at Agilent Technologies as a Microwave Design Engineer. Doan received a M.S. in Electrical Engineering and Computer Science from the University of California Berkeley and B.S. in Electrical Engineering from the California Institute of Technology.
Sohrab Emami Chief Architect, Co-Founder
Bringing 10 years of startup and wireless R&D leadership, Sohrab Emami leads the team who designs and implements the very complex integrated millimeter wave circuit blocks. Prior to co-founding SiBEAM, he focused 5 years of research and development at the Berkeley Wireless Research Center (BWRC) on the design and modeling of 60 GHz CMOS transceiver circuits for high data rate wireless applications, prior to co-founding SiBEAM. Along with Doan, Emami was awarded the Jack Raper Award for Outstanding Technology Directions Paper at ISSCC 2004 for co-developing a modeling approach for devices up to 65 GHz and for demonstrating the world's first CMOS amplifiers beyond 30 GHz. For breakthrough work on wireless systems, Emami was also awarded the Hitachi-UC Berkeley Management of Technology Fellowship in 2003. Prior to his work at the BWRC, Emami was co-founder of another startup company, KARA-Systems, Inc. where he was responsible for development of control systems and instrumentation utilized in industrial markets. Emami received an M.S. in Electrical Engineering from the Tokyo Institute of Technology and B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Sharif University of Technology.
Dr. Jeffrey M. Gilbert Chief Technical Officer
Dr. Jeffrey M. Gilbert is responsible for SiBEAM's overall technical vision and core technology research and development bringing almost two decades of experience in wireless communications, networking, real-time image and signal processing, and integrated circuit design, Prior to joining SiBEAM, Dr. Gilbert was the director of algorithms and architecture at Atheros Communications, a developer of wireless semiconductors. During his five year tenure at Atheros, Jeff led the development of Atheros' 802.11n, 802.11g, eXtended Range (XR), and Smart Antenna technologies, and managed the department responsible for the digital signal processing algorithms and various MAC & software algorithms. Prior to joining Atheros, Dr. Gilbert was the director of engineering at the Teratech Corporation, a start-up developing highly portable PC-based medical ultrasound imagers. Dr. Gilbert received a Ph.D. in Electrical Engineering from the University of California Berkeley, M.Phil. in Computer Speech and Language Processing from Cambridge University, and B.A. in Computer Science from Harvard College.
John Marshall Vice President of Sales & Marketing, Co-FounderWirelessHD Consortium Chair
Bringing ten years leadership of startup and Fortune 500 business operations, Marshall is responsible for SiBEAM's product and market vision and manages marketing, business development and sales. Since SiBEAM’s inception, Marshall also led the formation of the WirelessHD™ special interest group focusing on A/V networking and currently serves as the president of WirelessHD, LLC. Prior to joining SiBEAM, Marshall served as vice president of marketing and business development at 2Wire, Inc., a leading broadband services platform developer, supporting its growth from first product to market leadership on over $150M in worldwide revenue. Prior to 2Wire, Marshall co-founded 3Com's Wireless & Home Networking Division, capturing market leadership for its first product line in its first year. At 3Com prior, Marshall led emerging market development in ICE markets (information, communications, entertainment) from $40M to $400M revenue. Prior to 3Com, Marshall worked for a marketing consultancy advising technology companies on market entry strategy, segmentation, pricing, and competitive analysis. In addition to his work at SiBEAM, Marshall has served on the advisory board of Ruckus Wireless, as president of the Home Phoneline Networking Alliance (HomePNA), the board of USC's Entertainment Technology Center (ETC) and the Association for Interactive Media (AIM). Marshall holds a B.A. from Northwestern University and MBA from the University of Michigan's Ross School of Business.
Mohammad Tafazzoli Vice President of Operations
Mohammad has over 20 years of experience in semiconductor operations. Most recently he served as VP Operations at MediaPhy Inc., a leading provider DTV SOC solutions for mobile applications. Prior to that,he served as VP Operations at Beceem Communications, a leading edge provider of wireless broadband solutions for the emerging WiMAX market. Prior to that he was Sr. VP Operations at Genesis Microchip a fabless supplier of high end display image processors for flat panel TVs and LCD monitors. At Genesis, Mohammad oversaw the global Manufacturing operations and Quality organizations during which, he was responsible for supporting revenue growth from $10M to $270M and drove operational efficiency thru automation. He was responsible for operational due diligence on a number of M&As and managed the integration of the operations of Sage and VM Lab acquisition. From 1998 to 2000 Mohammad was Director of Operations at Paradise Electronics which was then merged with Genesis Microchip. From 1991 to 1998 Mohammad worked at Cirrus Logic Inc., the first fables semiconductor company to reach $1B revenue. Mohammad served in a variety of operational roles, most recently as Manager Product & Test Engineering in the Graphics Business Unit. Prior to Cirrus Logic, he spent 5 years at Singnetics (Div. of Philips) as a product engineer. He holds a bachelor’s degree in electrical engineering from San Jose State University.
Albert Scalise Vice President, Systems and Software Engineering
In his role, Scalise will focus on developing the systems and software to bring SiBEAM’s wireless solutions to customer applications. Mr. Scalise joined SiBEAM with over 22 years of experience in IC Design, system and software development and product management. Scalise came from Silicon Image where he was Director of the IC Design Engineering team developing HDMI devices for consumer electronics products and is one of the inventors of HDMI. Scalise came to Silicon Image through an acquisition of DVDO where he was a Principal Engineer architecting and designing digital video processing ASICs. He spent ten years at Apple Computer as a Lead Design Engineer where he was nominated for the prestigious CEO Technical Award for research and development in recognition of his groundbreaking work on the Power Macintosh. He holds nine U.S. patents and has a B.S. in Electrical and Electronic Engineering from the California State Polytechnic University Pomona.
Dr. C. Bernard Shung Vice President, IC Engineering, Co-Founder
Dr. Shung is responsible for high-speed DSP circuits implementation, digital MAC/SoC development and IC integration in the SiBEAM engineering team. Prior to co-founding SiBEAM, he was a Director of Engineering at Broadcom working on highly integrated Gigabit Ethernet and 10-Gigabit Ethernet network switching products. He joined Allayer Communications and led the engineering effort that resulted in Broadcom acquisition in 2000. He was with the faculty of the Dept of Electronics Engineering, National Chiao Tung University, from 1990 to 1997 where he conducted research on VLSI design for ATM switching and wireless baseband communications. From 1991 to 1994 he was the Chairman of the department, and in 1997, he was promoted to a full Professor. From 1994 to 1995, he took a sabbatical leave from NCTU to visit Qualcomm Inc. From 1988 to 1990, he was with IBM Almaden Research Center where he worked on IC designs for PRML read channels and pattern recognition. Dr. Shung received a NCTU Outstanding Teaching Award in 1994, and he was with the ISSCC program committee from 1999 to 2004, and a guest editor of IEEE Communications Magazine from 2003 to 2004. Dr. Shung received his BSEE from National Taiwan University, and MS and Ph.D. degree in EECS from University of California, Berkeley.
Arnold Brown General Counsel and Vice President Corporate Development President, WirelessHD, LLC
Brown is responsible for leading the company’s legal activities and corporate development activities in the area of licensing, standards and new market expansion. Before joining SiBEAM, Brown served as chief legal officer and general counsel of PortalPlayer, managing all legal, regulatory, SEC reporting and licensing functions worldwide. Brown helped prepare company for IPO and guide PortalPlayer ultimately through acquisition by NVIDIA in 2007. Before that, he served briefly as director of legal affairs at Silicon Image where he was instrumental in establishing key elements of the testing and compliance services for HDMI. Brown began his legal career as a corporate attorney with the San Francisco-based law firm Pillsbury Madison & Sutro (now Pillsbury Winthrop Shaw Pittman) and worked as an attorney at Venture Law Group. Prior to law school, Brown worked briefly as an analyst for the U.S. House Banking Committee. Brown holds a juris doctorate from University of California Berkeley, Boalt Hall, and a bachelor’s degree from Harvard University.
