Dr. Ronald D. Black Chairman and CEO
Ron is UPEK's CEO and chairman of the board.
Ron was previously chief executive officer of Wavecom, a publicly traded French wireless solutions company. He has also served in a number of senior executive roles at other companies including: executive vice president of the client systems group at Agere Systems, vice president and general manager of the Next-Generation Networks Business Unit at Gemplus (now Gemalto), general manager of the Communications Systems Division of Motorola's Semiconductor Products Sector (now Freescale), and a number of senior management positions at IBM Microelectronics in its Power PC Microprocessors group and its Electronic Packaging Applications and Development groups. Ron is UPEK's chairman and also currently sits on the boards of Heptagon and Inside Contactless. He holds a Bachelor of Science, a Masters of Science, and a Ph.D. in materials science and engineering from Cornell University in Ithaca, N.Y.
Alan Kramer Founder, President, and Chief Operating Officer
Alan Kramer is the founder, president, chief operating officer and a board member of UPEK, Inc., which was launched as a venture-backed spin-off from STMicroelectronics in 2004. He served as the company’s CEO from inception until 2009.
Prior to leading the spin-off of UPEK, Alan was a vice president of STMicroelectronics and director of the TouchChip business unit, where he pioneered the silicon fingerprint sensor business within the company. Before establishing and directing the business unit, Alan spent several years working as the director of the Innovative Systems Design Group within the Central Research Division of ST, establishing an international research organization focused on novel applications of silicon technology with sister labs in Berkeley and Milan, Italy. During and immediately following his years in graduate school, he worked as a researcher at both AT&T Bell Labs and Intel, where he was an early pioneer in the fields of neural network computing, adiabatic computing, and intelligent silicon sensors. Prior to graduate school, he worked for several years at Hewlett-Packard as an engineer developing software for computer-aided-design of integrated circuits.
Alan attended graduate school at the UC Berkeley department of electrical engineering and computer sciences, where he focused on neural networks and analog computing and during which time he was awarded both a Robert Noyce Memorial Fellowship from Intel and a Hewlett-Packard Fellowship from HP. He holds a BSEE from Yale University and has more than 50 patents obtained while with ST, Bell Labs and Intel.
Patrick Bouju Vice President of Worldwide Sales
Patrick Bouju is vice president of worldwide sales at UPEK. In this position, Patrick oversees and drives UPEK’s worldwide direct sales representatives and distribution network.
A veteran of the semiconductor industry, Patrick has over 25 years of management experience at senior level positions around the world such as deputy general manager of Thomson Components in Singapore, managing director of Thomson Far East in Hong Kong, general manager of Thomson Passive Components in the U.S., president of ST Microelectronics’ sales organization in Korea and Hong Kong, and president of IPC Peripherals Ltd., where he successfully restructured operations both in Singapore and the U.S.
Patrick served as well as CEO of Hagenuk Telecom Gmbh in Germany, where he had full P&L responsibility of the entire operation from design to manufacturing, including Sales and Marketing. Prior to joining UPEK, Patrick was a consultant for the TouchChip business unit of ST Microelectronics that led to UPEK’s spin off.
Robert H. Bond Vice President of Engineering and Manufacturing Operations
Robert is vice president of engineering and manufacturing operations at UPEK. Robert is responsible for management of the manufacturing supply chain from wafers to finished goods, providing volume production of fingerprint sensor chipsets. Since joining the TouchChip business unit of STMicroelectronics in 1999, Robert has successfully industrialized the manufacture and test for fingerprint sensors. He has also established and qualified high volume manufacturing capacity to meet present and future demands.
Robert has 27 years experience in the semiconductor industry, during which he has focused on IC manufacturing technology and package development.
Prior to STMicroelectronics, Robert worked for the world’s largest IC assembly and test sub-contactor as director of Advanced Manufacturing, where his work focused on cost reduction projects for very high volume products. Prior to that, he spent seven years in advanced IC package development involving initial industry development and standards for the following IC packages: TQFP, plastic BGA, CSP, and Flip Chip on laminates. Previously, Robert managed an automation project that included both IC FAB and assembly process development. Before that, Robert went on an expatriate assignment with Mostek in Dublin Ireland as equipment engineering manager, where he was involved in the start-up of an engineering organization for IC assembly and final test. Robert’s semiconductor experience began in 1978 when joining Mostek Corporation working on advanced test handler systems.
He has 15+ patents and 4 published papers. Robert received a BS in Mechanical Engineering from the University of Akron, Akron Ohio, in 1973.
Vito Fabbrizio Vice President of Product and Technical Marketing
Vito Fabbrizio is vice president of product and technical marketing for UPEK. Vito brings over 15 years of experience in product marketing leadership as well as deep technical knowledge in developing and marketing products in the wireless, PC, and semiconductor industries.
Vito joined UPEK at the spin-off from STMicroelectronics in 2004. His expertise has helped establish UPEK's product leadership in the PC and wireless markets. Prior to the spin-off, Vito was one of the original members of STMicroelectronics' TouchChip Business Unit, which invented and developed UPEK's innovative fingerprint sensor technology. While at STMicroelectronics, Vito also led research in parallel computing and neural networks from within STMicroelectronics' Central Research Division, an international research organization focused on novel applications of silicon technology, with sister labs in Berkeley, CA and Milan, Italy. Prior to joining SGS-Thomson (now STMicroelectronics) in 1995, Vito graduated summa cum laude from a PhD-equivalent research program run by the University of Pavia and the Italian Government. He also received a Masters Degree in Electrical Engineering at the Polytechnic of Milan with a focus on bio-engineering. Vito has been granted multiple patents for his work in parallel computing and fingerprint biometrics.
Giovanni Gozzini Vice President of Development
Giovanni Gozzini is vice president of development at UPEK. Giovanni brings over 18 years of engineering expertise with focuses on low-power silicon sensors, analog computing devices and high speed designs for telecommunication. Giovanni has deep technical experience in system level design and integration of semiconductors, hardware and software for biometric applications. He manages UPEK's technically diverse, global R&D organization.
Prior to UPEK's spinoff in 2004, Giovanni was director of hardware and algorithm design for the TouchChip business unit of STMicroelectronics, where he led the research and development of innovative fingerprint devices, bringing fingerprint technology for the first time to high volume commercial devices. While at STMicroelectronics, Giovanni also led research in parallel analog computing and CMOS imagers within STMicroelectronics' Innovative System Designs Group, an international R&D organization that he helped to launch.
Before joining STMicroelectronics, Giovanni worked at AT&T Bell Labs, where he led an international development organization in the design of high speed SDH telecommunication products.
Giovanni received his MSEE summa cum laude from Polytechnic of Milan with emphases on Microelectronics, Optoelectronics and Instrumentation. He has published technical research papers in the area and is co-author of over 25 international patents.
Carl Temme Vice President of Business Development and Strategic Marketing
Carl Temme is vice president of business development and strategic marketing at UPEK.
Carl brings 25 years of experience developing and marketing products in the wireless, PC, and semiconductor industries. Prior to joining UPEK, Carl was vice president of marketing and business development at Atrua, where he helped establish that company as a leader in the adoption of fingerprint for mobile phones. Prior to Atrua, he was the vice president of product marketing for Airgo Networks, where he helped to establish that company as a market leader in Wi-Fi technology. Prior to Airgo, he held senior marketing positions at Atheros Communications and VLSI Technology. He was also a senior manager in Accenture's Electronics and High Tech consulting practice, where he helped Fortune 500 companies to develop and implement market strategies and product development processes. Carl holds a Masters in Engineering Management from Stanford University and a BS in Electrical Engineering from the University of California, Davis.
